International kidnapping leads to child custody modifications

Florida residents may have heard of two fathers who were recently re-united with their sons. While both California men had shared custody agreements with the mother after their divorces, she purposely kept the children in Europe after her authorized vacation with them had ended. She not only kept the children, she also changed their names and appearance, and moved around often in order to avoid returning them to America and negotiating new child custody agreements with their fathers.

New bill offers hope in global custody battles

A new bill sponsored by Rep. Chris Smith might offer hope to parents involved in international custody battles. The new bill focuses on providing the State Department with more power through the use of diplomatic tools to help so-called 'left-behind" parents resolve custody situations in other countries where American legislation might not be recognized.

New model for family court

During a divorce in Florida, one of the biggest disagreements can be over visitation and time spent with children. Child custody battles can sometimes go on for years as the courts attempt to untangle what is in the children's best interests. One father, caught in the middle of court date after court date, fought for the right to see his children for several years. He eventually became a child advocate who spoke on the behalf of the children he represented.

Wade and ex-wife face yet another public battle

Basketball fans in Florida and across the nation are watching as Dwayne Wade and his former wife, not even one week after reaching an agreement on a $5 million figure, fight in yet another court battle. This disagreement focuses on child custody. Apparently, the basketball player wants his ex to undergo a psychological evaluation or forfeit all visits with their boys.

Co-parenting allows parents to work together for kids' sake

Divorcing parents in Florida who want to lessen the impact on their children now have a new tool: "co-parenting." It's a concept that can de-emphasize some of the thornier child custody issues in the parenting equation and allow both parents to more equally share in the responsibilities of raising their children.

Child custody is no longer a simple matter for divorcing moms

As family dynamics have changed in society, so have matters of child custody. For the past four decades, in Florida as well as in the United States in general, the roles of women within their families have changed as have those of men.
