Men and divorce

On Behalf of | Oct 4, 2013 | Alimony

While divorce proceedings can be difficult for both spouses, men can be affected in different ways both financially and emotionally. The tendency of some men to internalize their concerns regarding issues such as alimony or child support may put them at a disadvantage during subsequent legal proceedings. In order for divorcing men to express their thoughts, they may wish to take a few relatively straightforward guidelines into consideration.

Some experts advise men to temper their emotional impulses both in regard to financial decisions and negotiations and to instead be rational and prudent. If a man feels he should be entitled to receive alimony, he should not consider it a weakness to ask for it, and similarly he should offer to pay alimony to his former spouse if he feels financially capable of doing so. Alimony can be provided in a variety of ways depending upon state law, including lump sum or regular payments.

It is important to remember that divorces are started by one spouse initiating legal action against the other. As such, the potential for emotional adversity and elevated passion is relatively high, particularly when issues central to a person’s sense of identity and well-being are in question. In such a climate, reaching a settlement both parties consider fair can often seem an impossible task.

A man going through a divorce may wish to speak with an attorney experienced in divorce proceedings. Such an attorney may be able to provide advice and counsel regarding such matters as property division, alimony and child custody. The attorney may also be able to negotiate and prepare agreements relating to alternative forms of spousal and child support.
