Cliches people say about a divorce

On Behalf of | Oct 1, 2015 | High Asset Divorce

There are many things people say over and over again as they move toward a divorce. Though they may not realize it — especially if they have never been divorced before — a lot of these things are cliches. Below are a few examples.

1. The divorce doesn’t center only around money.

This is said especially during high asset divorces, when money is discussed often. People will say it when they want to take a stand, often on the grounds of “principle.” They’ll fight for money, but they’ll claim they are doing it for another reason — which may or may not be true.

2. The judge needs to hear about what happened.

Couples may be getting divorced because of something that one person did to slight or offend the other. Examples include spouses who are not faithful in the marriage. While this is clearly a big deal for the spouse being cheated on, he or she will mistakenly think that it’s just as much of a big deal for the judge. However, the judge values other considerations more — like who can provide the best home for the child.

3. The other person needs to be behind bars for perjury.

If someone does lie during a divorce proceeding, the other person may start calling for criminal charges, as lying in court is illegal. While this could happen in some cases, the reality is that lying during a divorce case rarely leads to these charges.

Are you growing closer to a divorce in Florida? If so, you need to know about all of your legal options and some cliches to avoid.
