We have talked about choosing a divorce lawyer who is a good fit by interviewing a variety of potential candidates. Many things may influence and are important to consider when choosing who to interview and ultimately hire. A potential client can identify candidates through personal or professional referrals, law firm websites, client reviews, advertisements, referral services, attorney directories and local reputation.
Board certification in marital and family law can bring peace of mind
The Florida Bar administers a certification program for lawyers with significant experience and knowledge in one or more of 27 areas of practice. Since 1985, board certification has been available for marital and family law practitioners who practice regularly both in and outside of the courtroom in matters like divorce, child custody, alimony, paternity and related areas of family law.
The program also vets candidates for ethical behavior, peer endorsement and ongoing legal education. They must successfully pass a rigorous examination in matrimonial and family law. To keep certified status, a family lawyer must obtain recertification every five years.
As of this July 2024 writing, The Florida Bar reports that 278 lawyers in the Sunshine State are board certified specialists in marital and family law. With over 112,000 members of The Florida Bar, being one of only 278 is a significant accomplishment and honor.
Assessed for skill, proficiency, ethics and dedication to family law
And it means that a Florida lawyer who is a board certified specialist in marital and family law has already been evaluated and examined for knowledge, experience and competence in this specialty. This professional stamp of approval should assist those seeking a family lawyer to represent them by providing a pool of choices already professionally screened for their qualifications. In addition, board certification also recognizes “character, ethics, and reputation for professionalism,” according to The Florida Bar.
Since 2012, our own attorney Daniel Forrest has been a board certified specialist (BCS) in marital and family law.
